    Considerations

What are the Risks of Boarding, Daycare, and Group Play

While most of our guests never have an issue, there are risks when taking your dog into any setting where there are multiple dogs and open play. We compare our facility to a childcare center where toys, drool, and other things are shared...and sometimes not. :) Here are a few risks to consider.

    1. Accidents, corrections, rough play, and arguments that result in nips, scratches, bites, muscle soreness, and contraction of whatever virus/bacteria might be around, etc,.
    2. Intact female:  We have several intact male dogs that visit for boarding and/or occasional daycare. Please provide guidance for EVERY visit of your intact female dog. We are not breeding experts and rely on your guidance.
    3. Results of exposure and/or time in a new/different environment.  Although it’s infrequent we have seen dogs that needed help adapting to epoxy flooring, metal gates, shiny surfaces, garage doors, etc.

    Aftercare

FIVE MOST COMMON BEHAVIORS IN YOUR DOG AFTER BOARDING

Changing the environment, routine, diet, and any other pattern your dog experiences in his/her life can cause stress. Every dog handles stress differently. After picking up your dog from our boarding kennel, you may see one or all of these five changes.  Most will go away in a day or two but if the change persists or is an extreme shift from your dog’s standard, talk to your veterinarian.

    Drinking Excessively

You bring Fluffy home, and she won’t stop drinking. Your first question is, when was the last time she drank? Did she have access to water? Yes, she absolutely had access to water.  We monitor water closely refilling regularly throughout the day. Dogs drink more when they get home for multiple reasons.

    Change in Diet

Your dog may eat his food ravenously when he gets home. Again you think, Did he eat while boarded? Again, yes. Same with water, over-excitement of seeing you and being back home may change his normal behavior. Don’t feed him right away. Let him settle-in and eat a few hours after returning home.

    Change in Personality

Your dog may ignore you or become extra clingy when you get home. Both are normal. Remember dogs are pack animals and look to you for leadership, structure, and protection. If you don’t make boarding personal, the dog will be less likely to make it personal.

    Change in Stool or Vomiting

The excitement or stress may result in your dog’s stool being soft or loose. If you forgot to bring food or we ran out, a switch in food may have a significant effect on your dog’s stomach.

    Sleeping a lot / Tired

Your dog will most likely come home and sleep soundly for a day or two. The combination of increased playtime, new friends, new smells and a new place leads to a lot less sleep. Similar to when you go on vacation and walk a few extra miles, the saying, “I need a vacation from my vacation,” comes to mind.

*Another uncommon issue: Canine Cough (AKA Kennel Cough)

About 4 to 5 times a year Beatrice and Lincoln see a spike in Canine Cough. If your dog develops a distinctive cough after spending time around other dogs (dog park, friend’s house, boarding, grooming, etc), he may have a case of Canine Cough. Just like when toddlers at daycare pass around a cold, dogs do the same with Canine Cough.

    Minimize the risks

    Help us do our best.

Make sure to enter and update your dog's information.

A & N relies on this information daily.  Can your dog have treats? Who do we call if you are unavailable? Recent surgery? Toy possessive?

    Know that we...

...read kennel cards at least daily (where dog information mentioned above is printed)

    ...do daily cleaning & sanitizing

...split dogs into groups per size/ temperament/preference

...listen to what each dog is 'saying'

...follow standard protocol for virus/ bacteria spikes. Isolate dogs with signs & symptoms.

Please bring your pet's food & medications and immunization records, if you haven't already done so. You are welcome to bring any special toys or blankets to make them feel at home. We provide cots, bedding and bowls.

We have potty stations with artificial turf, fire hydrants, tires, etc . See picture gallery.

Boarded dogs participate in group play depending on temperament, desire, and the number of dogs boarding.  Everyday we balance our boarders’ physical and mental health, the owners’ wishes, sanitation and illness prevention, and equal play-time.

Our kennels are at least 4' X 5’; most are larger (See picture gallery).  We have kennels that have kenneled a family of four Labrador retrievers. We have seen problems occur with the following kennel mates. Older with younger dogs, high with low energy, dogs that see each other occasionally, where fresh food (beef, chicken) or new food is served, one dog is a nervous pooper/pee-er.

We send email updates for dogs staying more than a couple of nights and as time permits.

Your dog will be introduced to a well-balanced dog that knows how to say Hi!  (and be said hi to) politely. If all goes well, we introduce another dog, then another. If your dog communicates he would rather be alone or he isn't able to interact safely, he will spend time in an area alone or with fewer dogs.

We understand most articles on the web tell you to tour the facility. However we're not offering tours for a few reasons including:

    1. Dog energy flips from level 3 to 10 which might result in fights, social regression, injury to employees and visitors, etc .
    2. To do one tour, group play has to stop and dogs have to be kenneled for about an hour.

Please see pictures of our kennels and play areas below in the picture gallery.

    >Depending on the degree of our concern:

    *We'll do nothing and monitor.

*We'll treat with meds/products on hand and text owner.

*We'll call the owner or emergency contact to chat.

*We'll contact the vet on record and chat. (They will contact you before treating.)

*We'll request you have someone take your dog to the vet or 24-hour vet in Lincoln.

*We will take your dog to the vet or 24-hour vet in Lincoln.
